Greetings,
I was wondering if Area 451 made a sticker suitable to go on the outside of my smart.  Anything like this exist?

Thanks

Nice of you to ask  ;D

But no.  At one point we did consider having decals made.  We had so many things to figure out with the development of the product that this idea just got put on the backburner and never came off of it.

Maybe it is something we should look at again now that we've finished with the development and things are settling down.

I would personally love it - add it to the other stickers on the car.  Good advertising for you, too.

Thanks

just thought of an idea for a decal.  Today, I had to remove a pin from a harness in an access control panel I was installing - poor crimp job on a factory connector, wire came out in shipping.   I thought "I know! I'll use a bent staple!"  and it worked like a charm... I was sitting there giggling to myself while pulling apart this connector much to my coworker's amusement.... and then I thought the Area451 logo should have a half bent staple somewhere as a nod to it's beginnings..

Did anything ever happen with the decals? I'd really like to have one for my car to go along with other manufacturer decals I plan to apply. If there are no plans for one, would Area 451 have a problem if an owner creates their own in vinyl to mimic the AREA 451 logo on black background?

Thanks!

We kind of looked into it... art might be my name, but its not my game  :   I surfed around for a bit but I couldn't really find anything that was price effective and appeared to be suitable for vehicle use.  I found loads of sticker sites, but I hate to think of people trying to get the sticker off and finding it left gobs of white gunk behind.  I found a few places that seemed appropriate for vehicles, but they focused on one-offs, which isn't cost effective from our point of view (though it may be perfect for individuals that want to make their own).

We have no problem whatsoever if you want to make your own.  In fact, we're honored!

There's nothing at all to our logo.  Seriously, I hope I don't shatter people's view of us here... but again, engineers... not artists.  One of us simply typed out "AREA 451" in white letters using a certain font I found, then changed the "4" to a basic pure red.  That's it.  Creative genius, I know .  Oh, and here's the real secret... the background is black.  Not fancy black, or raven black or jet black... just black black.

You can find the font here:  http://www.dafont.com/boycott.font

When you download it, if you read the enclosed text file you'll see it is "freeware typeface" that can be freely used for commercial or non-commercial applications.  So we don't own it any more than you.  To install it on a Windows computer, just extract the BOYCOTT_.TTF file to your computer, right click and choose "install" and it should then be available in any of your graphic or layout software packages.  Props to Ryoichi Tsunekawa of www.flat-it.com who developed the font and maintains copyright for it.

Its not a big deal.  I remembered someone mentioning "CafePress" on the CsC forum regarding fundraising for their site.  So I checked it out and they have stickers.  They have two ways to do things: their free site; and their premium site (about $65 a year).  The big difference, as I found out last night, is the premium can have more than one design of the same product while the free site is limited to one only - so one bumper sticker, one t-shirt, etc.  So if people want to use this, we have a decision to make - do we charge a "profit" on the items to cover the cost of the premium site and then have multiple design options for each item?  Or do we charge only the base amount (this means CafePress gets 100% of the funds to cover the cost of producing the item)?  The difference is $1 to $5 or so, depending on the item.

I'm not saying CafePress is the way to go.  Its just a quick and easy option.

Specifically in regards to stickers, it has a downside - no options on the shape or material.  It is a white background, which we can print entirely black if we want, but there's no way to have a clear background.  Clear would be preferable in many cases depending on the color of your car or if you want it on a window.  But it has an obvious upside too... its cheap and you can get just one if you want.

I opened a "store" and picked a few items and made some designs. Right now the prices are marked up with whatever their default was so we can make it a little cheaper if we don't care about the premium thing.  To be clear, SmartieParts and Area 451 are not interested in profiting off of this.  As said above, we're honoured that customers want to showcase our product and its free advertising.  So I have no problem at all in going in and changing the prices to the "base" levels.

The "store" is at: http://cafepress.com/area451

To get an idea of what else could be branded, if people were intersted, visit: http://www.cafepress.ca/make/personalized-gifts

We can certainly change the designs.  Or add new ones, but only if we go to the "premium" shop scenario.
