For those that have been following the "version 2" cruise control threads, I'm afraid this may get a little confusing  :-*

Officially, we are abandoning "version 2" for the time being.  Version 2 involved a complete re-writing of the primary cruise control routines, and it also added some features (such as pedal mapping and ScanGaugeII interaction).  Beta testing revealed that perhaps the V2 main cruise function was flawed, and every participant indicated that the original V1 was better... but they liked the other V2 features.

Since the primary function of the cruise control is... well... cruising - we figured the primary version number (1 vs 2) should reflect the primary cruise routine.

So what's all that mean?

As a matter of convention, we are doing something that seems odd... we're going backwards with our versions.  We are "abandoning" the "2"... pretending it never happened.  That will be shelved and possibly looked at down the road, but frankly 700+ customers are perfectly happy with V1 we may never bother.  We're going to call our newest release, V1.30.  The current release is V1.10 (who knew?) and V1.20 was scrapped before we went to 2.00.

Clear as mud?

So.  V2.  Gone.

Info on V1.30 to follow very shortly. Look for it in this forum.

Yes, to put it simple... V1.3 is V1.1 with the pedal mapping feature.

:o wow... I go out of the country for just a little while and so much change!

It has left me with some questions....

it appears that various pedal mapping selectable thru the Scanguage is no longer available?  I have become used to the tweaks I made to the BETA version... is it possible to keep a copy of the version 2.0 software with the tweaks i have made?

I am getting ahead of myself....  I see that the BETA CC has been requested back - I will get mine in the mail this week.   Is it possible for you guys to copy the program (with the changes I have made to some of the timers) and save it in a form that can be uploaded again?

Or, with with the uploader in-hand here, is it possible to save the firmware from the CC box to my computer here at home?  for example, I purchase a downloader, copy the BETA cc before sending it out and then upload that program to my version 1 CC box?

Sorry if I am not making much sense, I just did a quick read thru of all the changes and maybe these questions have already been answered.

thank you in advance,
Eric

Hi Eric,

V2 had more efficient core code than V1, but as you recall - people didn't like it as much (not as "smooth"), so for now it has been ditched and instead V1.30.x is ready which adds the pedal map feature - the feature it appeared most people wanted.  V2 could fit all 18 maps plus all the code required for Scangauge operability because of the more efficient (smaller) core code.  V1 doesn't have the room.  There was only room for two maps (the normal one + one modified one).  As far as the tweaks you made, I presume you mean for values you could change unrelated to the pedal map, right?  In other words, all the values that affect the core cruise functioning? No, you can't keep those and have V1.30.x at the same time because that's the core code that was the main difference between V2 and V1.  But really, if what you're saying is that you are happier with your tweaked V2 than you were with the original V1... then you should keep your V2!  But if that is the case (happier with V2) then I gotta wonder... why didn't that come up before?  The whole reason we ditched V2 was because everyone said they liked V1 better.  V1.30.x is a compromise (feature of 2, core of 1).

So, if I have that correct and you do in fact like your tweaked V2 better than V1, then:
  • You should keep your V2 and send back the V1 (the point of sending one back was so you don't have two - it doesn't matter which you keep).
  • You should figure out exactly what tweaks you made and share that so we others can try it and give feedback (then perhaps we can get back on V2).
  • If you didn't record exactly what tweaks you made, then you SHOULD return your V2 and we can read the data off of it to see what you did.
If I'm incorrect in what you're saying and you prefer V1's core cruise to V2, then there's really no point in you keeping V2 and your tweaks, because V1 would then have better core functionality, and the only (functional) missing feature is 14 of the 16 maps... but any one (plus normal) is available at any time via the programmer.

In either case, we can make V2 firmware available for people to download and try as they want as well.

Now THAT would be cool !!!

If you did that, then everyone (with a programmer) could try it out and you could REALLY get some feedback  :P

Then you would know if you should "unscrap" V.2  ::)

Thank you for a thorough response!  :D

To be completely honest, I do prefer the V1 cruise when placed back to back... it 'feels' smoother to me.
I have become used to the tweaks I made in the V2 but have grown to love the flexibility of quickly changing pedal maps. particularly when I get into a traffic jam, the 'econo' is perfect for stop and go.  It has also been fun to have a driver new to Smartcars feel the difference in the normal and BOOH maps... its like showing off a bit I guess.

I do not believe the value changes I made to the V2 are as smooth as the V1.  I have just become used to the way it behaves.  I haven't had the V1 back in in a long time.

Sadly, I do not recall what changes I made.  I remember using values a bit more exaggerated than discussed here. For example, there was talk of cutting a value by a third or so, I cut it down to almost zero...  but I changed values a lot and do not remember where they ended up.

I will be happy to send the V2 so that the changes can be read - I like having options, so getting a programmer a being able to choose a different flavor of V1+map(s) or V2 (with my changes)sounds very appealing to me.

Is the pedal map in V1 only selectable thru the jumper? for me, the Scanguage interface is a huge bonus....

But I also understand its a numbers game.  I am sure that a small percentage of CC purchasers are interested in that feature.

Thank you for the time and effort you guys have put into the support for this product!

V1.30.x map is only selectable via switch, not SG.  By "selectable" I mean you can switch between normal pedal function and the mapped one.

The SG functionality had to be stripped out to to work with the V1 code.  That's not to say we can't find a way to bring it back in.  Also, as Wizard said... with more people trying the V2 code and giving feedback it may very well come back at some point.  That's the beauty of the programmers... once more people have them, there could be a lot of possibility that comes with faster feedback from customers regarding changes.

But so far, only 4 or 5 programmers have been ordered.

If those start to move, we might look at making more firmware changes. But its a lot of work for only a few people.  So tell your friends!

My programmer arrived today and I've downloaded the maps.  :) Time to start experimenting.

Quick question: Can the programming be done in situ if I take laptop out to the car?  Seems like it should work but I don't want to mess anything up.

Do you have any way to notify all the CC owners/users? My guess is you'd have a lot more takers if people knew about the programmers besides us die-hards.

Ordered and recieved my programmer. I figured I needed the B.O.O.H. mode but found it a bit too 'touchy' and hard to drive around town. It did scream when you lightly put the pedal down and that was a rush!! Currently I am using #5, but may step it up a bit this weekend. Planning to take the laptop with me to KC, hopefully it will be tweaked to what I like before then. but 'just in case'.

Plan on showing it off while I am in KC for the nationals, hopefully you will see some orders from it.

FWIW, I just posted the info about the programmer's availability on SCOA. If any of you die-hards  ??? want to take turns posting your experiences, it'll keep the thread alive and visible to the the other Area451 users. This is the thread I posted the "news" in:http://www.smartcarofamerica.com/forums/f75/cc-functions-31562/index2.html#post343023

It probably would have been a good idea to collect contact info  :-[

Just don't have the car on when you do it.  Even then, it probably shouldn't matter... but better safe than sorry, right?  Actually that's probably dangerous for your laptop... so really... don't have the car on.

WOW, I buy this product over a year ago, install it and it works perfectly without one hitch! And now I come back to post that it has been working so well for so long and I find out I can now upgrade my firmware and get the boost feature that some other company boasts about (I won't mention their name) with their product! What a nice surprise on my overdue return to the forum. Only one thing I could of done after reading and taking in all this info. I ordered my programmer! I can't wait to get it and start flashing my unit.

Awesome work on your awesome product!
